Further extensions of Clifford circuits and their classical simulation complexities

چکیده
Extended Clifford circuits straddle the boundary between classical and quantum computational power. Whether such circuits are efficiently classically simulable seems to depend delicately on the ingredients of the circuits. While some combinations of ingredients lead to efficiently classically simulable circuits, other combinations that might just be slightly different, lead to circuits which are likely not. We extend the results of [1] by studying two further extensions of Clifford circuits. Firstly, we consider how the classical simulation complexity changes when we allow for more general measurements. Secondly, we investigate different notions of what it means to ‘classically simulate’ a quantum circuit. These further extensions give us 24 new combinations of ingredients compared to [1], and we give a complete classification of their classical simulation complexities. Our results provide more examples where seemingly modest changes to the ingredients of Clifford circuits lead to large changes in the classical simulation complexity under plausible complexity assumptions.

Embedding classical into quantum computation
We describe a simple formalism for generating classes of quantum circuits that are classically efficiently simulatable and show that the efficient simulation of Clifford circuits (Gottesman-Knill theorem) and of matchgate circuits (Valiant’s theorem) appear as two special cases. Viewing these simulatable classes as subsets of the space of all quantum computations, we may consider minimal extens...

The Gottesman-Knill theorem states that every “Clifford” quantum circuit, i.e., a circuit composed of Hadamard, CNOT and phase gates, can be simulated efficiently on a classical computer. It is was later found that a highly restricted classical computer (using only NOT and CNOT gates) suffices to simulate all Clifford circuits, implying that these circuits are most likely even significantly wea...

Let G(A,B) denote the 2-qubit gate which acts as the 1-qubit SU(2) gates A and B in the even and odd parity subspaces respectively, of two qubits. Using a Clifford algebra formalism we show that arbitrary uniform families of circuits of these gates, restricted to act only on nearest neighbour (n.n.) qubit lines, can be classically efficiently simulated. This reproduces a result originally prove...
متن کاملImproved Classical Simulation of Quantum Circuits Dominated by Clifford Gates.
We present a new algorithm for classical simulation of quantum circuits over the Clifford+T gate set. The runtime of the algorithm is polynomial in the number of qubits and the number of Clifford gates in the circuit but exponential in the number of T gates. The exponential scaling is sufficiently mild that the algorithm can be used in practice to simulate medium-sized quantum circuits dominate...
متن کاملClassical simulation complexity of extended Clifford circuits
Clifford gates are a winsome class of quantum operations combining mathematical elegance with physical significance. The Gottesman-Knill theorem asserts that Clifford computations can be classically efficiently simulated but this is true only in a suitably restricted setting. Here we consider Clifford computations with a variety of additional ingredients: (a) strong vs. weak simulation, (b) inp...
